Psychotherapy for…attention problems? Hyperactivity?

That’s right. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is characterized by problems sustaining attention, problems getting started on tasks that require mental effort and organization, as well as a feeling of being driven by a motor. It’s estimated that 3% of Ontario adults have ADHD.

ADHD can be “treated” with psychotherapy: but since it’s a neurodevelopmental condition, there is no fix or cure. I operate from a neurodivergent lens: which means that I meet people where they are at, and don’t pathologize ADHD problems. We collaborate on goals, figure out how ADHD negatively impacts you, and use your strengths to get there.

FAQs

  • ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition: which means it starts sometimes in childhood and can persist to adulthood. People with ADHD define themselves differently, but most would agree that they have problems sustaining their attention, can be impulsive, feel overly and actively compelled to do things, may fidget with their hands and feet when they have to sit still, and have difficulties starting and finishing tasks.

  • I cannot! Psychotherapists are trained to assess and treat mental health conditions. I cannot diagnose clients with ADHD. What I do is assess their symptoms and offer avenues to pursue formal diagnoses.

  • Algorithms are fun aren’t they? If you have ended up on the neurodivergent side of TikTok or other social media algorithms, you are identifying with certain videos that contain information about ASD and ADHD. Keep in mind though, these videos have not been fact checked for how valid and reliable their information is. If you are curious about your symptoms and feel like the content speaks to you, reach out for a consultation!

  • Medication is usually the first treatment plan for people with ADHD. Your family doctor (if you have one) can diagnose and treat ADHD with stimulant and non-stimulant medication. Even then, some of the symptoms are not managed with medication. That’s where therapy comes in. People with a lifelong course of ADHD generally carry some history of underachievement due to their symptoms: this can cause people to feel bad about themselves. In therapy, we work through how ADHD symptoms are causing problems in your life, and devise ways to improve your functioning in a neurotypical world.
